BSD - Based on Unix - Somewhat similar to Linux and was in fact started long before Linux. BSD is rock solid for security and proformance.
Linux - Based on Unix -
If you want free very good very very stable fast operating system you might
want to consider learning Linux.
Linux Live CD's
- Live CD's are a great way to test drive Linux. Most of them startup from a
Cdrom and many of them can save files to a HardDrive or USB Drive and they do
not make changes to your current operating system. In fact you do not even
need a HardDrive for most of them. You can even make and save your own
personal settings on many of them so you can take your entire operating
system and personal files with you to another computer.
BEos - This operating system can be
fun to play with but currently it is under redevelopment by several companies
and free software organizations. So unless you either just want a basic
system with a bit of a Macintosh feel to it to do basic operations or just
want to learn more about operating systems, I do not recommend BEos.
